The A6 Avant wagon has been a staple of the Audi lineup for years, so it’s no surprise that an all-new model is on the way to compliment the recently debuted sedan. Our spy shooters have caught a prototype testing out in the snow. There’s little in the way of news to report, as the A6 Avant will almost certainly be mechanically identical to the sedan. For the U.S., that means a 2.0-liter 211-horse turbo four and a 3.0-liter 310-horse supercharged V-6 while the Europeans get a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 amongst other options. Power transmission comes via eight-speed automatic or CVT en route to either the front wheels or all four corners. To be clear, Audi hasn’t officially announced the A6 Avant for the U.S. yet, but it’s more than likely coming here just as its predecessors did.

What we can tell you about the A6 Avant is what we can see, and that, namely, is a modification to the rear structure. Where A6 Avants of old were a bit boxy in the boot, the new model takes after its smaller sibling, the A4 Avant, and adopts a sportier slanted hatch. While it looks good, this will likely impact cargo capacity. We’re curious to see what it does to the car’s weight, as the new A6 sedan is touted for being lighter than the outgoing model.

With the A6 sedan out in the open already (you can read our full First Drive by clicking here), the A6 Avant is likely near completion and should debut later this year after the sedan has a chance to establish itself, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Until then, we’ll keep you abreast of anything new we learn about the upcoming A6 Avant.
