Introduction Review
Evidently deciding that BMW and Infiniti must know something it does not, Acura is moving fast to jump on the hopped-up, all-wheel-drive hatchback trend with the 2010 ZDX, which debuted at the 2009 New York Auto Show in prototype form. The production version of the 2010 Acura ZDX is scheduled to land on showroom floors this fall, set to battle the BMW X6 and Infiniti FX for a piece of the 17,208 sales these two models racked up in 2008.

and “Hopped-up, all-wheel-drive hatchback” is our term. Acura refers to the ZDX as a “four-door sports coupe” but when we think of sports coupes, a Nerf on oversized wheels is not what materializes from the gray matter. Nevertheless, Acura’s goal with the ZDX is to “blur the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle” while breaking new ground with “segment bending” design.
If Acura is to be believed, the vehicle above is not an SUX, not CUV, and not a wagon. No, Acura is calling the 2010 ZDX a four-door sports coupe. If you thought the BMW X6 was an odd bird, you’re going to love this.
The ZDX will be powered by a 3.7-liter, all-aluminum V-6 engine will send 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque through an all-new six-speed automatic transmission. Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters should lend to the ZDX’s sports coupe image, while standard Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) should keep the 19-inch, 7-spoke alloy wheels glued to the asphalt.
Inside, the ZDX seats up to five adults in two rows of seats, behind which is a cargo area can also be expanded to accommodate longer objects, such as golf bags, by removing side panels in the cargo-compartment sidewalls. As an added bonus, there is an integrated under-floor storage area.
When the ZDX hits Acura dealers later this year, customers will have the choice of three distinct trim levels: ZDX, ZDX with Technology Package, and ZDX with Advance Package. Standard on all ZDX models is the panoramic glass roof, leather interior, Bluetooth connectivity, power tailgate, and USB audio interface with iPod integration. The Technology Package adds navigation with voice recognition, an Acura/ELS Surround premium audio system, and a new multiview rear camera. Finally, the Advance Package adds a blind spot information system, a Collision Mitigating Braking System (CMBS), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
The 2010 ZDX shares some mechanicals with the big MDX crossover, but gets a coupelike body more suited to its seductive mission. The rear end has a muscular appeal, and the side view does all it can to convince you it’s a coupe. Up front, the big, controversial Acura shield grille gets its most attractive installation yet. But there’s something about this class of vehicles that just doesn’t work in TheCarConnection.com’s eyes. Some reviewers have moderate praise for the ZDX’s styling. CNET calls Acura’s latest MDX derivative “a mash-up of sedan, SUV, and sports coupe,” while USA Today points out “a tucked and tailored roof covered in black glass panels and…rear-wheel bulges that would be striking even if the roof’s taper did not accentuate them.” Car and Driver considers the Acura “endearingly weird, the sort of vehicle you might expect Citroen to produce,” though whether you find that charming or off-putting is a matter of personal preference. On the positive side, most reviewers agree with CNET’s assessment that “the grille, which stands out like a beak on the smaller Acura sedans, seems to have found its medium” on the 2010 Acura ZDX.
According to the latest information, 2010 Acura ZDX four-door sports coupe will be available at the dealeships across US on December 15 with a base MSRP of $45,495, plus a destination and handling charge of $810. The all American-born vehicle made its world debut at the New York Auto Show in April. Its stunning coupe-like styling and outstanding performance have already generated a tremendous amount of excitement in the fans.
“Acura dealers are seeing strong interest from customers for the ZDX well before its official on-sale date,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “The ZDX is like nothing you have ever seen before from Acura.” The all-new 2010 Acura ZDX will be available in three trim packages, a well-equipped ZDX, ZDX with Technology Package, and a ZDX with Advance Package.
The standart ZDX will feature the world’s longest panoramic glass roof, concealed rear door handles, hand-stitched leather dash, center console and door panels, and the exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system. Every 2010 ZDX will be powered by a 3.7-liter VTEC® V-6 engine, which produces 300 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.
The ZDX with Technology Package adds an Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic™ with Traffic Rerouting™, AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with radar image maps, a full VGA display screen and an innovative new multi-view rear camera. Additionally, the Technology Package includes an upgraded Acura/ELS Surround® 415-watt Premium Audio System with a built-in 15-gigabyte hard disk drive (HDD) media storage system, a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, dual-zone automatic climate control system and Keyless Access System (with Smart Entry and push button ignition)its.
