2009 Alfa Romeo Brera S - Front Side
Very few sport cars are developed only for Britain’s roads. Alfa Romeo has intended these cars for the true driver’s cars. After a year of extensive suspension and chassis developments, Prodrive, the worlds-leading motor sport specialist, Voices out their opinion on this car with outstanding driver feedback and handling. Different from other cars, this unique addition to Alfa Romeo’s UK range of cars has limited their models to individual 500 cars. The power of this car exists in two direct injection petrol engine, the 185 bhp 2.2 JTS and the 260 bhp 3.2 V6 JTS.

Peter Cambridge comments: ‘Our painstaking work with the spring set-up controls exactly how much the car pitches and rolls with every lump, bump, camber and pothole on our roads. Then we developed the dampers to control the rate at which the springs respond. Once we were satisfied with that, we set about really affecting the feel and response of the steering to inspire confidence.’

The platform locates the engine transversely and accommodates front- or four-wheel drive, which Alfa calls Q4 and employs a 43/57 front-to-rear torque split that varies in response to wheel slip using a Torsen center differential. In Europe, the V-6 comes with a six-speed manual transmission for now, but a six-speed automatic transmission should be introduced later this year.
We drove the Brera in Italy, and although we had some questions about the road behavior of the Euro-only front-wheel-drive versions — disconcerting torque steer and tramlining that seemed to depend on the tire size and type — the Q4 model that we’ll get in the States had a confident composure. With its quick steering (2.25 turns lock-to-lock) and rear-biased torque split, it was eager to turn into corners and then gripped hard

At each corner of the Alfa Romeo Brera S, unique Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione-inspired, lightweight 19″ alloy wheels have been fitted. Although the wheels are eye-catching, the all-new design was commissioned by Prodrive primarily for performance, rather than just cosmetic appeal. The reason is unsprung weight – the weight carried by the car on the ‘road side’ of the spring and shock absorber. This plays a significant role in the way the car steers, handles and transmits feedback to the driver.
The lighter the wheel, the better it tracks undulations in the road surface without requiring heavy damping to control it. The unsprung weight has been further reduced by the adoption of hollow anti-roll bars and aluminium suspension components from the Factory.
