Details surrounding General Motors’ 2011 model-year vehicles is just starting to trickle out. Although no official announcement has been made, a glance at GM’s online order guide is confirming that the 2011 Cadillac STS will be devoid of a V8 option.
Since it’s launch in the 2005 model-year, the STS has had GM’s well-known 4.6L Northstar V8 optional. The overhead cam V8 was rated at 320 horsepower and 315 lb-ft. of torque in the STS application. The Northstar engine dates back to about 1992 and has been in constant use since, with occasional updates.
For the 2008 model-year GM added the 3.6L SIDI V6 as the base engine, replacing the old port injected 3.6L. The new V6 boosted the STS’s base power ratings to 302 horsepower and 272 lb-ft. of torque, closing the gap between the V6 and V8 models considerably.
GM has been phasing out the Northstar V8 over the last two years, so this comes as no surprise. It is unclear how much longer the aging STS will remain in production. This may be further confirmation that there will not be a Cadillac DTS in 2011 as the Northstar is it’s only engine option.
